My theory:
Baal wanted to find the "Evil" Ruby in the past, the Ruby he loved and trusted in. Since nobody knew where Ruby was from 1982 (aftermath of the Evil Dead trilogy) to 2015, and we know that by 2015 she had already changed a lot and wasn't that "evil" person anymore, I think Baal just guessed that Pre-Evil Dead Trilogy 1982 was the perfect point in time.
He knew Evil Ruby was in Elk Grove or Elk Rapids, searching for the Book of the Dead. Plus, Baal needed the Book of the Dead in its "physical"/original form, apparently. Maybe it required a lot of energy (from Baal's part) to make "passages" from the Book surface on Pablo's body.
It was a great plan, I must admit it!
Jesus Christ, yesterday I rewatched the first "meeting" between Ash and Henrietta, Episode 9. Terrific cinematography and atmosphere, so creepy. Perfection.
